ABOUT JOE CAMPBELL
About Joe
Joe is married and has an adult son and step-daughter that both live outside of Moscow. (see more below) Joe is the youngest in a large family of sisters -one severely disabled- and one much older brother. While growing up in New Jersey, Joe lived below the poverty line, but was active in school sports and excelled at Wrestling. Joe received his Bachelor's from Rutgers during which time he worked in various service positions, but struggled financially through graduate school at University of Arizona, where he was a dishwasher for a restaurant, and enjoyed that position for its obviously clear objectives. Once established and tenured at WSU, he changed many lives and influenced much in his field. Joe is deeply grateful every day for the opportunities, friendships, and support that came to him throughout his life, and hopes to continue good works for the people of Moscow.
During his 26-year tenure with WSU, Campbell co-founded the Inland Northwest Philosophy Conference, helped create a joint MA program with University of Idaho, and was Program Chair of the American Philosophical Association (2011), consistently among the largest philosophy events in the world. Campbell was the first Director of the School of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs and won two of the university’s most prestigious teaching awards: the Marion E. Smith Faculty Achievement Award (2005) and the Honors Thesis Advisor Award (2006). He just published his ninth co-edited book volume, Companion to Free Will (2023), part of the Blackwell Companion Series.
